Hope for the Holidays

Hope for the Holidays

During the Holiday season in 2020, Ama launched our first annual toy and essential needs drive initiative as a movement to do good and give hope by bringing community partners together with a focus on helping families in need, both local & across borders. Through this initiative, 56 Kent County families had toys for their children under the tree in time for Christmas as well as a basket of holiday food and essentials. 800 toys were given away on February 13th in our first ever Christmas in February toy distribution, 19 community sponsors got involved, and the work was featured on both local and national media.

This project will launch this fall with opportunities to buy toys, collaborate, sponsor, and contribute! Want more information?

Ama Mission 2018

Zapopan Connection Center

During our second mission trip abroad to Zapopan, Mexico, we took our community outreach to the next level by offering free medical and dental care, haircuts, carnival games, and inflatables for kids. Our big project was building the Connection Center, a community center for youth and children from impoverished neighborhoods. The Connection Center, which is about 75% complete, hosts weekly classes and includes a 500-book library.

Oaxaca Clinics & Building Project

Our third mission trip abroad took us to Oaxaca, Mexico, to serve a little town still recovering from a devastating 2017 earthquake. The heart of our mission was to care for the people of Santa Maria Xadani and help create sustainable change through medical and dental clinics, skills training, and a community-building project. This trip made possible by the year-long efforts of nearly 50 volunteers was life-changing for both the participants and the recipients. More than a thousand people with a vast range of conditions received treatment from our medical and dental teams, while 15 aspiring entrepreneurs learned the skill of tailoring and around 450 children enjoyed crafts and fun activities. Our building project, a much-needed public restroom, will continue to benefit this community for years to come.

Hope for the Holidays 2020

During the Holiday season in 2020, Ama launched our first annual toy and essential needs drive initiative as a movement to do good and give hope by bringing community partners together with a focus on helping families in need, both local and across the border.

The initiative resulted in over 800 toys to 56 Kent County families working with 19 community sponsors. Three additional pallets of toys were shipped to Mexico and distributed the weekend of February 14th.

Pandemic Pantry Program

In late March, Ama began to partner with MeXo restaurant and Faith Church of Grand Rapids to provide masks (PPE), food baskets, meals, and essential needs to vulnerable populations through volunteer drivers, zeroing in on individuals with social determinants that prohibit them to access resources.

In August, Ama was awarded a CARES Act Grant to continue this good work and 4500 people were provided for in September and October. Foods were sourced at local farms and through local grocers to maximize impact.

Supply Transports

Ama has transported a total of $370,000 worth of supplies into vulnerable communities in Mexico since 2018. In 2020, we transported a total of $200,000 worth of PPE, medical supplies, clothing, educational resources, hygiene products, technology, and other essentials.
